The Grand Pre: AT&T Emerges as a New Seller

With the intense anticipation of the Palm Pre’s release in the next month, there has been much hype and speculation about the specifics. But it seemed clear that Sprint would be the seller of the Pre, at least until the end of their exclusive contract in 2009. Until today, no one knew who else might step in after the contract ended.

At the D: All Things Digital D7 Conference today, speaker and AT&T Chairman, CEO, and President, Randall Stephenson verbalized that he foresees AT&T also selling the Pre once Sprint’s contract has ended. Once again, AT&T is on the verge of selling another wildly successful smartphone. They’ve already invested billions of dollars into enhancing their wireless networks after the popularity of the iPhone, so there’s no doubt they’ll be ready when the time comes. And perhaps this new addition to the AT&T family will make up for the losses they’ve encountered in their landline business branch.

For eager Palm Pre fans who plan on buying at their Palm Pre phones at the beginning, they’ll have to go through Sprint. Sprint was hoping that the success of the Pre would boost their business, and it still may. But for the patient AT&T loyalists, AT&T will definitely gain a small monopoly now that the word is out. And if the Palm Pre shortage turns out to be what it’s made out , those who aren’t able to purchase their Pre at the initial release may decide to wait until AT&T begins selling. To add to the mix, one can only speculate what complications may arise over AT&T carrying what will most likely be two of the most popular smartphones: the iPhone and the Palm Pre.

So for now, the latest news in these pre-Palm Pre days is that AT&T will follow Sprint in selling the Palm Pre. What’s still unknown is print’s outtake on all this. Most likely we’ll be hearing their perspective soon.

AT&T to sell 3G-equipped netbooks in stores nationwide

After a series of limited in-store trials that begun last month, AT&T has taken the plunge and announced a full-on netbook push. The company plans to sell netbooks from the likes of Dell, Acer, and Lenovo in with built-in 3G network capability its more than 2,000 retail stores, starting this summer.

AT&T announced the plan in a press release on its Web site that claims that the netbooks will be “ideal” for customers like tweens, teens, and students, and “convenient” for adults and small business owners. AT&T executive Ralph de la Vega is quoted in the press release stating that customer response in the Atlanta and Philadelphia test markets has been good and that a wide range of demographics are interested in the 3G-enabled netbook offerings.

The line between so-called smartphones and conventional computers continues to blur, but choosing to sell netbooks — especially in this current market — could wind up being a bad decision. AT&T already sells 3G USB dongles in its stores, and the margin on those has to be higher than what it can make off selling Acer netbook. After all, a netbook is not going to replace a customer’s “real” laptop; it’s often a secondary machine, and in this case one with expensive 3G networking hardware embedded inside.

As cell phones get more powerful, dedicated “computers” are going to get left behind in favor of the computers we carry around in our pockets. But all is not lost — after all, AT&T could create some kind of desktop-based calling application that, paired with a Bluetooth headset, would make the union between desktop and smartphone complete.

Blackberry Bold delayed with ATT wireless until Mid August

Yes Sadly the Blackberry Bold has been delayed with ATT wireless until mid August, but that still isn’t far away.

ATT Boost their 3G network speeds… yahh for faster 3g

“AT&T has completed upgrades to its HSPA 3G network that increase uplink and downlink data speeds. Under real-world conditions, LaptopConnect users can expect downlink speeds between 700 kbps and 1.7 Mbps. This is up from 600 kbps to 1.4 Mbps. As for uplink speeds, they will range between 500 kbps and 1.2 Mbps, up from between 500 kbps and 800 kbps. AT&T’s 3G network is present in 275 markets in the U.S. AT&T plans to add 75 more markets by the end of 2008.” Phone Scoop

Att Wanting 20mbps in select markets by next year?

“Speaking to investors, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said that the company will enable 20Mbps downloads via its HSPA wireless network as early as 2009. He also said that by 2010, its network will be capable of 100Mbps downloads. AT&T has chosen LTE for its 4G technology, which is targeting 100Mbps downloads as a standard. While the 20Mbps and 100Mbps speeds de la Vega is speaking of are possible in optimal conditions, real-world speeds will be much slower. The LTE standard has also yet to be ratified.” Phone Scoop

LG is ready to make a big splash with their LG VU with ATT wireless. They are already have a huge market share with CDMA and Verizon, but never had that with ATT Wireless, until now atleast. LG’s Shine has been a hit with ATT Wireless so far and now they will have a huge hit with the VU on ATT’s network.
