Documents-To-Go, released by Dataviz, is a powerful iPhone app building off the success of its Mac and PC software, winning Apple’s App Store Pick of the Week in June, and rating a 4+. Documents-To-Go is available for both iPhones and iPod Touches installed with the iPhone OS, so AT&T haters can still enjoy Office on the go. And boy, is there a lot to enjoy.

· Edit and create Word documents
Documents-To-Go offers integration with Microsoft Word (.doc & .docx) that is truly remarkable. The features we’ve grown used to have all been preserved: the laundry list of options includes spell check, complete character/font formatting, paragraph formatting, auto bullets and numbered lists, and the ability to insert and delete tables. With iPhone OS 3.0, sending of files through email, cut/copy/paste, and shake-based undo/redo are also available.

· View Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, and Apple iWork files
Now you can view files from Microsoft Excel 97-2008, Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2008, and Apple iWork ‘08-’09. The other viewable files include website files (.html and .htm) and most image files, which should be handy for those involved in multimedia or web industries.

All told, Documents-To-Go is a must-have for office work on the iPhone. It takes useful functions from older apps like QuickOffice, and by integrating the entire Microsoft Office Suite so beautifully, blows away all competition.

The iconic iPhone, which is arguably the most popular smartphone ever invented, is a mobile device that has, waiting at its beck and call, around 50,000 apps—tech-speak for ‘applications.’ As mini-programs, apps can be anything from a recommended work-out routine, a carpenter’s level, a remote control, or even a compass. With new apps being created every day, the limitation of what is being invented is the limit of the inventor’s mind and the powerful platform of the iPhone.

However, around ten thousand of the fifty-thousand iPhone apps are games. That’s a lot of games. My own device hosts a total of 37 apps, eight of which are games. That ratio, the number of games I have verses the number of apps on my device, is just about on average with the 20% of all apps being games.

Apple’s App Store, the one-stop shop for all these apps, has downloaded more than one billion apps since opening day. Educated guessers speculate that more than half of those billion downloads—five hundred million plus—are games.

Apple, whether intentionally or accidentally, has touched off a growing generation of these casual gamers who play games on their iPhone while commuting, listening to music, waiting in line, sitting in class, or even while working. Greg Joswiak, Apple executive, heralds the iPhone as the “future of gaming.” But is that ‘future’ already upon us? By recent report, iPhone gamers now consist of a nearly 80% of the iPhone population, a population that has passed the 40 million member mark.

So what is a ‘casual gamer,’ and how does one know if he or she is one? Nearly everyone is a casual gamer. You are a casual gamer if you’ve played any electronic game, and don’t play it all the time. By more specific definition, the casual gamer is anyone “who show[s] more than a passing interest in video games.” In other words, casual gamers have a life outside of playing games.

Casual gamers are the approximate opposite of a hardcore gamer—someone who spends nearly all of their time playing video games. These are the kind of people who were able to beat Super Mario Brothers 3 in eleven minutes…when they were four years old. MegaGamers defines the hardcore gamer as “a male, between 14 – 34 years of age who has gaming in their top priority list, for example, someone who would prefer to play a game instead of sleeping at night or watching TV. Basically a game addict.”

iPhone users they are not. (The screen is too small.) But the growing demographic of casual gamers bodes well for a growing niche market of casual games. And for the present, Apple has a virtual monopoly on the market.

Apparently, I’m not alone in my refusal to buy the software update. As AppleInsider noted, iPod Touch users, “deterred by a $10 upgrade charge — are adopting the new software at a snail’s pace.” AdMob sketches out the numbers of iPod Touch users who have downloaded the upgrade, revealing a skinny 1% who are now operating on 3.0.

What’s the problem? “The additional $10 fee to upgrade is clearly limiting uptake,” states AdMob. But it’s not just consumers who are limited by the fee. “Developers looking to sell applications utilizing the 3.0 features can’t be happy with Apple’s decision to charge for the upgrade as it limits their available market size for downloads.”

The meager number of iPod Touches using 3.0 is in direct contradiction to the hordes of iPhone users who have eagerly downloaded the 3.0 upgrade. So, as a member of the snail’s pace tribe, I venture some explanation for my miserly reaction toward the 3.0 upgrade.

Apple states that with the new software update, I can “Buy Movies, TV Shows, and Audiobooks via Wi-Fi.” Somehow, I was able to do that just fine by syncing it with my computer, so I wasn’t convinced. Besides, downloading a move on Wi-Fi? Sounds to me like the download time on that is going to be a problem.

Another come-on that Apple proffers is the “Peer to Peer Gaming” advantage. Since my iPod touch has a whopping 1 game on it so far, I’m not exactly jumping up and down to get peer-to-peer gaming. One potential upside of the upgrade is its stereo Bluetooth ability. Since I spend too much time untangling my earbuds and trying to find a convenient place to put them when I’m done, this could hold some appeal. Only some.

Other functional features, touted by Apple as being great advantages are the “Cut, Copy, Paste” ability, “Landscape Keyboard,” and “Spotlight Search.” Since “cut, copy, paste” is something I normally do in my word processing program, I decline this advantage. Landscape keyboard? What?! Just when I was getting used to typing in portrait? And spotlight search? Hmm. Not enough lost and hidden files on my iPod yet to make it worth it (though my iPod Touch-toting friend claims this is his favorite feature).

In my final analysis, the stereo Bluetooth capability is the coolest feature that 3.0 offers—for me at least. Unfortunately, it’s going to cost me $10 for the upgrade, plus a cool $40 for a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Wait, that comes to $50! Wow. Now my miserly heart is really resistant.

But on a more speculative note, further rumors have been freshly stirred. Some of the econo-tech prophets go even further to suggest that Apple may have a cheaper phone ready to unveil, not just a reduced-price plan. The ‘cheaper phone’ could be a dumbed-down version of the iPhone, smaller perhaps and with a few less bells and whistles—like a touchscreen, for example. Owning one would still give you bragging rights to, “I have an iPhone,” but would limit your coolness slightly, because it would only cost $99. The cost-reduced phone would appeal to the larger crowd of have-nots, since Apple realizes that the lion’s share of their iPhones are being sold to 100k+ earners. A new phone at a lower cost could lure fans of other lower-priced smartphones, the penurious student population, and the much-predicted China market. Along with a reduced-cost iPhone would come a reduced-cost plan to match. The rumor mills haven’t quoted a price on that yet.

Another possibility is that Apple/AT&T would come out with a prepaid device. Again, a cost-reduction would be a big invite for potential customers, as well as deliver a blow to some of their prepaid competition. 

The rumors go by the name of Charlie, and by Apple’s conference time next month, all rumors should be cleared up. Apple is certainly gaining a lot of second looks from all sectors of the market, which is going to help their shares, regardless of whether or not we get to meet Charlie face-to-face.

Free software does exist but if you want ease of use, a very low learning curve, and ‘point and click’ functionality – then iToner 2 should be the top choice.

You can create ringtones using various clips as the latest version supports the range of formats: AAC, WAVE, AIFF or MP3 formats. Creating personal ringtones is a breeze with this software. You can sync songs for later use if needed.  Also, an update is available that supports the iPhone firmware version 1.1.1 so Ambrosia have nicely kept iPhone users happy.

Why is this software so easy to use? As mentioned, it’s a drag and drop process. Simply drag your music files into the iToner window and then press the Sync button to complete the action. These ringtones are then available to you immediately.  Customized ringtones are in popular demand globally and so many sites exist selling all kinds of goofy files. It’s become a popular pastime for many people whom have grown to love mixing up files in their spare time.

There are ways to use iTunes to send files to the iPhone though it does mean altering the settings in iTunes depending on the format. Though if you don’t mind that then using iTunes is fine.  The idea with using iToner 2 is to simplify the process. Using iToner 2, you can just copy ringtones directly to your iPhone.  

It’s quite organized for you too as any files waiting to be sent to the iPhone will bear a sync icon. Set up a list of tunes and decide later which ones suit you best. All it takes is a click on the sync button when you are ready.

The main competitor is Garageband which many ringtone makers argue is a much better choice. Though, Garageband is more expensive to buy than the iToner software. If you are a new Mac owner, the Garageband software will come pre-installed.  But it is not as simple to use in comparison to iToner 2 demanding just a basic ‘drag and drop’ requirement from the user and merely clicking on a button to sync with the iPhone.

Also, you don’t need iTunes to play a part here as it’s not needed to open your ringtones. One other nice aspect is that iToner 2 detects the iphone immediately upon connection. If mixing up tunes and customizing your own quirky little pieces of music on your Mac is something you indulge in quite regularly, iToner 2 will make your ringtone making and iphone syncing life an easier one.

The new iPhone OS version reduces the handset’s dependence on a host PC. A new “Store” menu lets users sign in and out of their iTunes accounts (rather than rely on the desktop version of iTunes) as well as view and change credit card information. Apple needs only to add wireless syncing to further reduce host PC dependence.

On the desktop iTunes front, many blogs (including The Apple Blog) have noticed that the legalese in the about box now mentions DVD and (gasp!) Blu-Ray playback. This is an intriguing development: current versions of iTunes don’t mention either format, so perhaps Apple is planning to add DVD and Blu-Ray playback into the next version of iTunes and eliminate the separate DVD Player application. After all, it doesn’t make much sense to call the program “DVD Player” if Apple plans to add Blu-Ray players to its computers.

There is also another, more intriguing possibility: Apple might be planning to let users import DVD and Blu-Ray movies directly into iTunes for later playback without the disc — and download onto an iPod or iPhone.

Almost a quarter of the many millions of cell phones sold in 2008 were smartphones. So, it’s no surprise that consumer demand has influenced the arrival of so many applications for smartphones. For one example, Skype has been added to the platforms on both the Blackberry and iPhone cell phone clients.

The mobile application market is set to add that extra ray of sunshine for both phone models. It’s about flexibility and what the consumer needs to be able to access each day: checking emails, watching videos, browsing the web, networking on facebook or just updating a blog. The cell phone application market is exploding with innovations such as Wizi, a social web application that allows users to know the locations of their friends for an example in the social community arena.

The smartphones emerging just improve with each model whether it’s a blackberry or an iPhone. In the end, it’s the practical usage required by the consumer that decides which model is best.

Both are practical devices whether for business or personal use. Here are 10 points to consider before you decide on your flashy smartphone:

1.      The Blackberry models are best suited to those whom use email for business purposes on a regular basis. The iPhone with its multimedia capabilities is more suitable for regular consumers whom like browsing the web, and listening to music with access to the iTunes store.

2.      The iPhone has a much more ergonomic design and a more intuitive user interface. For example, web browsing is very simple via the user-friendly controls.

3.      The iPhone has an in-built YouTube application.

4.      The Blackberry models lack Wi-Fi ability whereas the iphone has Wi-Fi to compliment its GPRS and super-3G connections. Both models allow users to download Skype. Though, at present, it only supports Wi-Fi.

5.      The iphone has touchscreen functionality with easy sifting from one menu button to another. The Blackberry Bold has the standard push-button keyboard.

6.      The Blackberry best suits email users whom need to type quickly on a standard keyboard layout with a QWERTY layout as with computers. The preference to have a keyboard will lean the blackberry more towards business users whom need familiar access to mail on the road each day.

7.      Both phones have SAT-NAV ability with Google maps though the iPhone does not have traffic information or the real-time directions that people are accustomed to gaining via a SAT-NAV system.

8.      The Blackberry Storm model camera can record video whereas video recording is not a function of the iphone.

9.      The Blackberry Bold and Storm models have greater storage capacity locally whereas the iPhone 3G relies on remote server storage.

10.  The Blackberry Storm model has a faster processor than previous models and so downloading attachments is a lot faster than the iphone.

Perhaps this list will enable you to make an informed choice as to which phone suits your needs best. List your reasons for purchasing a Smartphone and look carefully at what you will gain from its functions. This practical approach will set you in the right direction.

As The Apple Blog reports, Jardine and Haddad have made between $500,000 and $600,000 since they released their first app Weightbot. That’s not a bad return on what is essentially a $0 investment. Both developers devoted only their own time to creating their applications, relying on word of mouth (including a plug from John Gruber) to spread the word about their applications.

In the short time that the iPhone OS has been around, the philosophy of “one thing, as well as possible” seems to have taken hold. In their blog post, Jardine and Haddad state that they aren’t planning on changing any aspect of the business model that’s brought them success so far. Instead, they’ll keep on focusing on small, simple apps that do one thing very, very well.

Convertbot and Weightbot are two bright spots on an App Store that seems to be filled with flashy, annoying software. Hopefully more developers can adopt Tapbots business philosophy — not only will it (hopefully) make them rich, but it will make for a more rewarding and just plain enjoyable iPhone experience for the rest of us.

Citing a “plugged-in” industry executive, Bussiness Insider’s Silicon Alley blog reports that Hulu is developing the app for iPhone and iPod touch. Blogger Dan Frommer writes that Hulu has proven itself in the online streaming world, so its mobile app “could be the best.” So far, Hulu has not commented.

Hulu content is streamed through the user’s browser rather than downloaded, though, so unless the iPhone Hulu app adds some kind of download feature (which is unlikely) iPhone users won’t be able to save their videos for later viewing. As Frommer points out, this would negate the most common iPhone video viewing scenario — watching videos on the subway or airplane — because of limited network connectivity.

A dedicated Hulu app would certainly be a boon to the iPhone. The site has one of the best catalogues out there, and since it’s free users will have carte blanche to watch as they please. Even though the app will compete with Apple’s paid video content in the iTunes Store, the company will likely allow the Hulu app to further spur iPhone adoption.

Ars Technica reports that developers can now choose between three distinct types of notifications for push alert — icon badge, text alert, or sound. Rather than leave the alert type up to the local application, developers can choose which type they want on the server level. Ars reports that this is a welcome change.

More intriguing is an enhancement to Dashcode, Apple’s IDE for developing Dashboard widgets for the desktop version of OS X. Apple now allows developers to use Dashcode to develop iPhone-targeted Web apps. This is an interesting development, since many have speculated that Apple might create Dashboard-like app functionality on the iPhone, especially since several bundled iPhone apps (like Stocks and Weather) strongly resemble Dashboard applications, and since Web-style app development is touted as one of the strengths of Palm’s upcoming Pre handheld.
