As it turns out, not too bad. Current reports chart Palm Pre sales at 300,000 during the month of June. Those are big numbers for Palm. Despite the early snafu about inventory shortages, Palm has no problem now, cranking out more than fifteen thousand of the devices on a daily basis.

While those may be big numbers for Palm, they look paltry compared to those of Apple. Apple sold more than three times that many phones in just three days. But for Palm, it’s a step in the right direction. The new mobile device resurrected the company’s gasping market. Just a couple of years ago, tech prophets were forecasting doom for Palm. Today, the story is different. Palm reading aside, there is no question as to the company’s present success.

Investors are pleased about Palm’s skyrocketing shares. The company’s valuation jumped a blistering 350% this year, thank you, Palm Pre. But the company cannot rest on the laurels of the Palm Pre forever. Much ground must be covered before Palm can relive the legendary glory days, when “Palm” was synonymous with the handheld computer. Now, that ground to cover is swarmed by factions like iPhone, Blackberry, Android phones, and the variegated brands of other smartphones. Good numbers, yes, but the future still hangs in the balance.

June 6 is a launch date that Sprint placed upon itself. Now, they are rushing to get ready. Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint Corporation told investors, “We think we are going to have shortages for a while.” Because of the expected shortages, the company doesn’t plan to launch a big advertising campaign. Hesse explained, “We won’t be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time.”

Part of Hesse’s optimistic prophecy may have been an effort to cheer up investors, who just watched Palm’s shares tumble by 10%. The tumble come when Sprint announced that the new Pre would sell for $199, matching the cost of the competitor, iPhone. Investors had hoped it would cost less than the iPhone.

The Pre comes with a lot of anticipation for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s the first real smartphone to come from Palm in a long time. Palm, a forefather of the smartphone, slowly faded from the scene with the ascendancy of competing PDA and phone manufacturers. Now, the Palm Pre holds promise for a reassertion of the Palm into the mainstream market. Furthermore, some claim that the Pre will challenge the dominate position of the iPhone. Since the iPhone, the Goliath of the smartphone world, is so popular, any underdog that may give it a run for its money will get a lot of attention.

All the “we’re going to run out of phones” may just be a timely marketing move. All is fair in love and smartphone wars. With this summer promising to be the stage of the biggest smartphone wars yet, this may just be a savvy move to boost Pre sales.
