So far, apps have been downloaded aggressively from Palm’s online store. Only a month and a half after the Palm Pre’s release, users have downloaded nearly two million apps. Yet thousands more are just waiting to be developed. Now that the SDK is available, it is free for the downloading, developing, and disseminating of Palm Pre applications.

The development site gives potential developers all the information that they need to begin crafting programs. It’s all free. Downloading the kit, learning about building applications, and joining the developer community are all open to the general public. For a few months, development tools was only available to a select few.

The development portal release comes at a good time. The Palm Pre got an uh-oh announcement from Apple on Tuesday. The new version of Apple’s iTunes lowered the smackdown on Palm Pres, which crept in as iPod lookalikes to sync with the software. Now, Palm Pre users are unable to sync with iTunes if they are using the latest version of the software.

The broadened app market for the Palm Pre could mean better sales. That’s the idea, at least. One of the fueling factors for the iPhone’s virulent growth is the rapid dissemination of apps—1.5 billion to date. Getting your hands on more and better apps is the key to having a valuable mobile device. Thus, more and better apps for the Palm Pre will hopefully kick up sales for the shy-of-a-million Pres already produced.

The downside is that none of the apps will be released until this fall. That could be one of the strikes against Palm, since anticipation has been high for a well-stocked app store ever since the Pre hit the shelves. Palm is busy coaching developers and holding meetings, like the developer confab at Palm’s corporate headquarters (July 28), and a development summit on August 8.

Palm needed the Pre. And now the Pre needs apps. Since Palm’s slow and steady digression over the past few years, hopes have been high for a saving device like the Palm Pre to step in and halt the decline. So far, it’s working. But hard blows like the iTunes fiasco and a slower-than-desired uptick for apps is making it difficult. The Mojo SDK, if strategically directed, could make or break the Palm Pre—and the ultimate success of Palm Corporation.

However this may be about to change as Sony has revealed plans to develop a hybrid device that combines PSP gaming with the Sony Eriksson model. The PSP has been a popular gaming console for some time.

Does this sound like a myth? What would such a device cost the average consumer?

Obviously, this is an attempt to compete with the iPhone which has a nice foray of gaming options and multimedia displays. Sources at MobileToday broadcast the claim back in January 2009 that Ericsson had indeed expressed a view that a more competitive phone was needed to match up to iPhone’s clasp on the mobile market.

Are we talking about a Playstation style phone also branded as Playstation or Sony PSP?

Whichever route is chosen, the aim seems to be heading towards retaining a hold on the mobile market and not losing out to Apple’s aggressive marketing.

Let’s look at how this will work for the market by looking at the users; consider a group of users whom like iPhone’s multimedia capability and Sony PSP gaming:

1. Convergence of gaming and phone functions allows for a more flexible portable device aimed at a variety of interest groups.
2. Not intrusive while gaming, a function from Sony will allow a dialog box to be displayed stating ‘A call is being received, would you like to suspend gaming?’
3. Transformation from a mobile phone into a gaming device is simply applied by rotating the device 180 degrees so gaming occurs with PSP style control.

Apple has captured a rather large segment of the market with the iPhone, iPod and the popular music portal iTunes. What Sony wants to avoid is their share of the gaming industry being compromised by Apple too.

Outside of this impending combination, Sony does have the PSP Go on the way which will go head to head with iPhone. Also, the market over the next few years will become filled with these types of phones. Yes, there are other players in the market.

Nokia N-Gage may have been a disaster on legs as people simply shunned the idea of the rather heavy cumbersome device, particularly when the iPhone arrived. Though, Nokia are hitting back with a new model coming out soon set to carry some major improvements. Microsoft Zune is set to become a major player in the world of mobile gaming.

A Samsung cloned phone already offers a mobile phone and gaming console combo but is pretty dodgy and I won’t be reviewing it for a while. It’s called Samsung 5200 but is not manufactured by Samsung but rather a Chinese manufacturer under the trade name of Anycall. It carries brands which must be violating copyright law with PSP etched as a trademark. Still, it exists and can be bought and has a suite of wonderful Nintendo games coupled with the usual functions of a mobile phone. But, if problems occur, what supplier will take responsibility – you can be certain that Sony won’t touch the device with a barge pole.

One aspect that will work if it is branded a Playstation phone will be the connection to the Playstation network. The PSP enabled phone would have access to the Playstation network allowing avid gamers to have further mobile gaming options.

So, gaming on your phone is moving up the technology wonder queue. Expect to hear about the Sony model soon enough.

WordPress has had an iPhone app available for a while. That’s not the news. The news is that many WordPress site developers were frustrated with the finicky formatting and slow load rates of their WordPress sites on mobile devices. Brave New Code specializes in WordPress site development: “We design & develop WordPress themes, plugins, & custom installations, helping our clients get the most out of WordPress as a content management & publishing tool. Extensible, powerful & easy-to-use, WordPress is our first recommendation.”

Thus, it was no surprise when they came out with WPTouch, a plugin that optimizes WordPress sites for flawless display on mobile devices (especially the iPhone, iPod and Android). The whole plugin is a speed-saver. Heavyweight Java scripting? No problem. The WPTouch rips it aside pretty quickly. However, if the user checking out the WordPress site on the trimmed-down mobile version doesn’t like it, he or she can easily toggle back to the original WordPress theme, using built-in toggle option at the bottom of the site.

To test the site, I used my iPod touch to visit a WordPress site that had been optimized with WPTouch. Within six wireless seconds, the entire site was up for display. When I turned off the mobile option, the site took more than twice as long to load—and with far less visual appeal. The first thing I noticed about the mobile viewing experience was the site title. It was cut off. Obviously, since I knew the name of the site, this wasn’t a big problem, but it did look slightly tacky. The best feature was that all of the recent site articles that I was most interested in were easily navigable—right in plain sight. By tapping on the entry, I gained instant access to the blog entry (with split-second load time). My favorite part was the complete absence of ads and the annoying popup that the site always gives me. I liked not having to double-tap (or two-finger zoom) to focus in on one portion of the screen. Everything that I needed to see was optimized to my iPod screen size.

The fatal flaw of the plugin, at least to my limited survey, was the inability to turn the WPTouch option back on. Now I’m not sure if I’m permanently barred from every viewing sites through WPTouch or not.

WTouch is perfect for any WordPress theme owners who need the visibility of mobile visitors. The device is packed with user-friendly options for WordPress owners, enabling them to customize the plugin as they see fit. Brave New Code touts it as “an entire theme package for your WordPress website…showing your content beautifully, all while not interfering with your regular theme.” They’re right, for the most part. Now, if I can just figure out how to turn it back on…

Using your phone, you can scan barcodes of items in to the phone using the in-built camera. This displays pricing information and other details on that particular product. Here is the gem – the application compares prices of items from other stores and prices online. All you need to do is install the application, and use your phone camera to take pictures of the item you wish to buy. It can also search prices by the product title.

It’s like a deal finder that moves with you, an interactive bargain hunter that works in real-time. Finding the best deals on products will place pressure on stores to become more competitive if the application becomes seriously ubiquitous.

You can manually type the barcode if that is easier for you. Try creating a list of your favorite items and do some searches; the application will store those searches for later browsing. This is great as a Price Alert message comes up if a better deal exists for one of the products. By accessing live comparisons of products, you can be sure to find the best deal.

This is another application to emerge from the open source Google Android platform. One possible setback may be your type of phone as it needs the Android system. It’s worth gaining this system as it opens the door to so many new tools. Android has allowed developers to code all kinds of useful applications and the phone is being converted into a multi-tasking gadget.

You will need Android Market on your phone to download the application. From there it’s easy, launch the market, and go to applications, then shopping. You will find ShopSavvy there to download.

The application will list the retailers locally or anywhere else and you then simply look for the best deal. You may be in a store already and think…hmmmm…that looks pricey. Perhaps you are just being inquisitive here, so use ShopSavvy to check.

It’s a bargain hunter’s dream come true. Instead of spending hours surfing across web pages, type the item title into the application and it feeds the best deals data to your phone.

The new myTouch 3G is a close cousin of the HTC Magic, albeit updated and slimmed down. Significant aspects of the new smartphone include its updated touchscreen technology, lack of a keyboard and larger screen area. The phone has excellent WiFi connectivity, a built-in camera, easy e-mail interfacing, and probably some other surprises. One such ‘surprise’ will be the search function that operates based on a user’s voice input. Video recording capability is also one of the rumored advances that that myTouch may include, issuing an obvious competitive jab at the new iPhone’s capability to do the same.

The good news is that the myTouch 3G is slated to roll out next week. The probable price tag is suggested at an affordable $179.99 (with two-year subscription contract), considering its loaded status.

The Palm Pre, with its launch date just over a week away, may have a few more tricks up its proverbial sleeve. Already, it boasts an exciting array of new features and pleasers. At the top of the salivating critics’ lists are things like an unfailing OS, a lissom feel, sweet visual interface, seamless integration with top apps like Facebook and Twitter, and lots of other cool stuff that we won’t know until we have it in hand. The Pre has one more for us: the Palm Pre will sync with iTunes. Syncing with iTunes is a daring move that no non-Apple mobile device has tried so far. It is surprising that it would come out on such a highly-publicized and media-riveted device as the Palm Pre.

We’re not sure if this is a marketing trick, an under-the-table deal, a kowtow to the Apple, or just a way to boost Pre sales. Whatever it is, it’s probably a good thing (for Palm), if for no other reason than iTunes has literally flooded the mobile music market with its application. Now, the Palm Pre can get a taste of the action.

If the sync-with-iTunes rumor is true, the iPhone, Touch, and iPod cannot claim exclusivity on the iTunes user market. Thus, the Palm Pre has strategically encroached upon territory that previously had no competitors. We’re not sure how Apple is going to respond to this one, but it will probably urge them to up the ante on whatever iPhone or iPod is going to come out next. With competition from the Zune HD (and its fresh makeover), and now these ominous breezes from the Palm Pre, things are getting more tense on the hotly contested smartphone and mobile device market.

But there is a caveat to all of this. Apple is not a company known to give up very easily on questions of patents and intellectual property. So says Tim Cook, Apple’s ravenous COO, who threatens to “go after [competitors]” who snag Apple’s ideas and rightful property. What this means for Palm Pre is that they may be called to the carpet on more than just the multi-touch screen on the Palm Pre. It may mean that they have to explain or otherwise wriggle out from under their ‘intrusion’ into Apple’s turf.

Tim Cook takes it very seriously, and back in January, he said it in no uncertain terms: “We approach this business as a software platform business. We are watching the landscape. We like competition as long as they don’t rip off our IP. And if they do, we will go after anyone who does.” This probably means that Tim won’t like Palm Pre. While the battleground back in January was the multi-touch technology, the issue will be the Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes.

The ultra-thin phone also features a 5-megapixel camera, onboard fitness software, and a built-in GPS that can interact with golf software. It is the ultimate vacation/recreation device.

With a price tag of more than over 400 USD, it might seem a little steep for this simple mobile phone. But if you’ve ever gotten wet retrieving your phone, you’ll quickly realize that the price more than makes up for the letdown of watching money go down the drain. As with most technology, as the solar phone is developed by more and more companies, we will most likely see it further enhanced and economized.

The current iPhone monthly subscription costs $69. Under the cost-reduction plan, users would save $240 over the span of the standard two-year subscription plan. Apparently, the monthly subscription price has been a barrier for some—a price that is a scary $1,880 when it’s all said and done. Wal-Mart iPhone sales have suffered, and the iPhone recently lost its place as the leading cell phone. An inexpensive “iPhone Nano” product has not been forthcoming. Now, Blackberry is busting out smart marketing campaigns. The Palm has its own collection of coruscating products that promise to do quite well in the smartphone market. In essence, a massive counteroffensive is challenging iPhone’s supremacy. They are waging war on the iPhone.

And AT&T is not misinformed. This may be their counteroffensive to the smartphone war that is now ramping up. The delicate thing about their move is that it involves raw numbers—straight-up cost. It doesn’t involve new technology, a better network, a smoother operating system, or an improved plan. That data point alone suggests that the iPhone has hit a maturity level—a level beyond which it cannot (or will not) progress. The price cut will probably be announced one month from now during Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference, in tandem with the launch of the new iPhone. Little is said about the new iPhone, but nobody seems too terribly excited about it. A failure to advance its technology has forced Apple to reduce its pricing.

In the meantime, there has been little information that denies Apple’s interest in placing their phone on Verizon’s network. This, too, could be a potential boost for the flagging iPhone. 

At least, that’s how BusinessWeek’s Peter Burrows understands it. His reading of the Apple tea leaves is that the company is planning to introduce powerful competitor to the Flip Video from Cisco (formerly Pure Digital). The iPhone’s large, high-dpi screen and powerful processor make easy video editing — a la iMovie — a no-brainer, and the device’s always-on Internet capability means that after videos are edited they can be uploaded to YouTube or other services quickly and easily. Never mind that they can be show off people photo-wallet style on the phone’s gorgeous screen.

Burrows bases his prognostication on Apple’s no-comment stance regarding the latent video editing and recording features already dug up in the iPhone OS 3.0 betas. He also figures that, since Apple is famous for making late entries into hot markets (like MP3 players or smartphones) the video-camera-and-editor combo seems right on the money.

If Burrows is right, Apple will certainly change the definition of what the iPhone is — no longer just a great phone and software platform, but a tool for creating rich media as well. This also bolsters the argument that Apple will soon release an “iPhone lite” — after all, if the regular iPhone is to have so many killer features, it makes sense for Apple to release a cheaper-stripped down version. Still, I’m not sure that Apple would consider the video camera market significant enough to warrant investing time and money in software development. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

A German developer who’s gotten his hands on the OS 3.0 firmware has supposedly noticed clips that show editing, scrubbing and clip functions in the coming update, according to TUAW. Another report from The Apple Blog notes that the new iPhone will contain a 3.2 megapixel camera, with a 5.0 megapixel version to follow in a later update.

What’s all this mean? While iPhone OS 1.0 was all about getting the core functionality right, and 2.0 was all about the App Store, iPhone OS 3.0 will be all about media. Rather than merely creating an awesome environment for consuming media, Apple may be planning to make the creation of media just as easy. Other iPhone OS 3.0 details released by Apple seem to support this conclusion (stereo Bluetooth support, the voice recorder app, and possible keyboard support).

Time will tell if these rumors are simply rumors, or if Apple does indeed have something else up its sleeve for this summer. Either way it’s pretty much guaranteed that the next-gen iPhone will have something new and unexpected.
